Tips and Tricks to Beat the Bugs this Summer

Ready to get outside?

Fresh air? Check! Sunshine? Check! Mosquitos, horseflies and wasps? Check! Nothing ruins a camping trip faster than discomfort from bug bites.

Check out these quick tips and tricks to keep the bug bites at bay from your outdoor adventures this summer.

What You'll Need:

☐  Light coloured clothing
☐  Unscented toiletries
☐  Bug repellent
☐  Bug repellent candles and lanterns

✔ Dress for the outdoors

Choose your outfit carefully to avoid becoming a bug-target. Light coloured clothing is essential, since many insects are attracted to dark colours. Long sleeves and pants will also give you additional protection.

✔ Avoid wearing scents

Scents are a sure-fire way to attract bugs to your campsite. Choose unscented toiletries, including perfume, hair products or deodorant. The more scents you can snuff out at your campsite, the better.

✔ Use insect repellent

Use a bug repellent to keep the insects away. If you’re not comfortable with applying repellent to your face, try spraying it inside your hat, or on a bandana that you can wear around your neck or on your head.

✔ Choose the right tent

Include a screen house in your camp and tent set-up. They’re versatile and easy to pack up, so you can enjoy a leisurely meal or relaxation time without the constant interruption of unwanted visitors. Look for tents that have mesh to keep the bugs outside, where they belong.

✔ Light up repellent candles, lamps, and lanterns

Look for insect repellant-devices that function as light sources to save car space.
