How to Properly Fit a Helmet
A helmet is a critical piece of safety when you are scooter riding, in-line skating, or riding a bike. It is important to buy a helmet that fits snugly on your head. Before trying on your helmet, remove anything that could change the way your helmet fits. This could be a baseball cap, big hair clips or headphones.
Ensure the foam structure inside the helmet fit firmly around your head. The helmet should completely cover the top of the forehead and be 2 fingers’ width above the eyebrows.
Adjust the side straps of the helmet so that it fits snugly around your ears in a “V” shape.
Buckle your chin strap and tighten is until you can only fit one finger between the strap and your chin. For this step, make sure the helmet is level on your head.
Shake your head from side to side, and from front to back to make sure your helmet does not move around when doing outdoor activities. As a final check, open your mouth wide. Your helmet should pull down slightly on your head.
Check your helmet’s expiration date. Most helmets last approximately 5 years, depending on sunlight and exposure to other everyday elements. If you helmet is ever damaged in an accident, be sure to immediately replace it.
